All About SYTT
The South Yorkshire Transport Trust was formed in 2007, by five like minded individuals, with the common aim of securing the long term future of the growing number of former South Yorkshire PTE vehicles entering preservation.
The SYTT took over the bus storage operations of the Kimberworth based SYSL in 2008, and moved the entire collection to Bays C and D of the then vacant Tinsley Tram Sheds, Sheffield.
As the SYTT’s name and image suggests, the vehicle collection is focused on the South Yorkshire PTE in the 1970’s and 80’s but it is not confined to the SYPTE, or just to this period. The Trust’s collection actually spans over 60 years, with the oldest vehicle dating from 1946, and the newest from 1991. Some of the vehicles are owned by the Trust itself(around 10), and the remainder are privately owned by Groups, or individuals.
The Directors and Officers of the Trust, together with the general Membership are all volunteers, and can regularly be found working down at the Tram Sheds, on a vehicle, or the building itself.
There is much work always to be done. The collection now consists of 72 vehicles, 55 full size buses, 2 mini buses, and 15 smaller vehicles, including cars and vans.
Due to the onset of Deregulation in the mid 80's, when the Trust buys a bus, it has almost always completed over 20 years service, so to be kind, they are rather worn out, and need substantial work to restore then to back to original as delivered condition. Rome was not built in a day you could say!
The SYPTE vehicle collection consists of 37 vehicles at the time of writing. There are still a few gaps in the collection, and it is hoped to fill these over the next few years. There are still one or two surprise vehicles around the corner.
Keep visiting our site, and look out for the first Open Day at the Tram Sheds in the not to distant future.
